How to style a wedding at Middleton Lodge
If you’re getting married at Middleton Lodge, you’ve probably already fallen in love with the venue before you’ve even started thinking about how to style it.
That’s one of the things I love so much about styling a Middleton Lodge wedding. You’re not starting with a blank canvas. From the Fig House and Main House to the Walled Gardens and the beautiful grounds surrounding the venue, there are so many spaces with their own character, textures and features, meaning that when it comes to wedding styling, we want to complement the space rather than over-style it.
Start with the space…
One of the first things I look at when styling any wedding is the space itself. What does the room already give you? What are the best features? Where does your eye naturally go when you walk in? For a ceremony in the Main House, we already have the beautiful wooden door as the main feature and, in the Fig House, the arched windows and doorway lead the design.
The most important question is: what can we add that makes it feel like your wedding while still showcasing the beautiful main features?
Middleton Lodge already has that calm, relaxed feel to it. Even just walking around the grounds feels peaceful, and I like to continue that same feeling throughout the styling too. So, rather than filling every available space with decor, I think about how we can add colour, texture, fabric, florals and lighting in a way that complements everything that is already there. See how we did this for Lauren & Louis’ wedding in March!
Styling the Fig House…
The Fig House is such a wonderful space and, in my opinion, doesn’t need loads adding to it. It’s bright, airy and full of character, so the styling needs to enhance it while also bringing in your personality and colour combinations.
The tables are trestle tables and they’re relatively narrow, which is something you need to consider when planning your table styling. You don’t want to fill the whole centre of the table with huge arrangements and then have nowhere for your guests to comfortably eat, chat and enjoy themselves. Sometimes a simpler table design will have much more impact.
Of course, that doesn’t mean your tables need to be boring or feel flat. This is where I love bringing in colour through napkins, candles and smaller floral details, as well as using fabrics elsewhere in the room to bring your colour palette through. Hanging floral arrangements could also work beautifully in the Fig House, particularly if you want to add impact without taking up valuable table space.
Styling the Main House…
The Main House has a completely different feel. The ceremony room isn’t huge, so again, you need to be clever with how you use the space. The winding staircase is one of those features that immediately catches your eye, and there’s a beautiful wooden door at the front of the room which makes a really lovely ceremony backdrop.
Rather than trying to cover everything with flowers, I’d concentrate the styling where it will have the most impact. You could enhance the doorway with florals, introduce fabric to bring your colour palette into the space or add some softer details around the ceremony area.
There’s also an option to give the winding staircase a moment, but I would avoid the ceremony floor space as it is quite narrow and real candlelight isn’t allowed on the floors for safety reasons.
And then there’s the front of the Main House itself, which is SO beautiful in every season that it really doesn’t need anything at all.
Don’t forget the Walled Gardens…
The Walled Gardens are another part of Middleton Lodge that I think you should let speak for itself. There’s so much natural beauty and texture already there that whatever you do with the ceremony space, it will be stunning. I recommend thinking about how you can enhance it through fabrics and florals, which can then be repurposed in the Fig House.
Because Middleton Lodge already has such a soft, natural feel, I think your colour palette can really help bring your personality into the wedding. You could go soft and neutral, introduce warmer earthy tones, add a pop of colour or create something completely out there, and it would always look amazing when done thoughtfully.
There isn’t one particular “Middleton Lodge wedding style” you have to follow. That’s the beauty of it. You can still make it completely yours. The important thing is making sure the colours, fabrics, flowers, stationery and smaller details all work together, rather than choosing lots of individual things that you love and hoping they’ll somehow look good together on the day.
That’s something I see couples struggle with all the time. There are just SO many lovely things to choose from. The styling process is really about bringing all of those ideas together and creating something that feels cohesive. Click here if you need help with this!
So, how do you style a wedding at Middleton Lodge?
My advice is, choose your colour combo, hire a stylist and a florist, and let them work their magic to create your soft, balanced wedding styling, which is full of personality and completely enhances the already beautiful venue you have chosen.
Middleton Lodge is already calm, beautiful and incredibly well considered. Your wedding styling should complement that. Bring in your personality. Bring in your colour palette. Add texture, candlelight, beautiful fabrics and floral arrangements where they will have the most impact, and let the venue do some of the work too.
