Modern Wedding Styling Ideas for the Bride Who Loves Understated Elegance

There are SO many beautiful wedding ideas on Pinterest, but when you're saving everything from neutral tablescapes to statement florals, it can be difficult to work out how to bring it all together.

If you're dreaming of a wedding that feels modern, chic and beautifully put together, it's all about choosing the right details and making sure they work together. You don't need to fill every corner of the venue. It’s a clear vision and a few thoughtful styling decisions that make all the difference.

Here are my favourite wedding styling ideas for creating that understated, elegant look.

1. Carefully select your colour combinations

Start with a few complementary shades that work with your venue. Maybe it’s ivory, champagne, soft taupe and dusky pink and then introduce a pop of colour through your florals, napkins or candles. Then select an accent colour such as gold, silver, glass or black to add that extra layer of design.

The key is to make sure everything feels connected, rather than choosing individual details that look lovely on their own but don't quite work together.

2. Layer textures on your tables

Beautiful table styling is about so much more than choosing a centrepiece. Floor length linen, textured napkins, charger plates, glassware and candles at varying heights all help create depth and interest.

I'd always pay attention to your table linen, too. Floor length tablecloths make such a difference to the overall finish, creating a more considered look from every angle.

3. Choose florals that complement your design

Flowers can completely transform a space, but think about their shape, scale and colour alongside your other styling choices.

Soft white blooms, sculptural arrangements and delicate greenery work beautifully for an understated look, while dusky pink or burgundy can introduce a little more personality.

You can also repurpose ceremony flowers for your reception, helping you carry the design throughout your venue.

4. Use candlelight to create atmosphere

I'm a big fan of candlelight. Combining different candle heights with glass holders and warm lighting creates such a lovely atmosphere, particularly as the evening draws in.

Think about your venue's existing lighting, too. It's easy to focus on all the pretty details and forget how much the lighting can change the feel of the room.

5. Make the most of your venue

Before deciding what decorations you need, look at what your venue already offers. Beautiful architecture, large windows or interesting interiors can help shape your design.

Some spaces need statement florals or fabric draping to bring them to life, while others benefit from a more subtle approach. The aim is to enhance the space rather than compete with it.

6. Bring the smaller details together

Your welcome sign, table plan, menus and place names should feel like part of the same design.

Carry your colours and textures through these details so everything feels cohesive. You don't need to personalise absolutely everything. Just choose the details that add something to your overall vision.

7. Don't try to recreate every Pinterest idea

This is probably my biggest piece of advice. You can love lots of different wedding styles, but that doesn't mean every idea will work together.

Instead of choosing individual details separately, start with the feeling you want your wedding to have. From there, you can build a design around your venue, colour palette and personal style.

This is exactly how I approach wedding styling. We take all your inspiration, refine your ideas and turn them into a bespoke design that feels cohesive from start to finish.
